Two of the most commonly used words that I hear students confuse are fun and funny. While they are both positive in nature and can be used as adjectives (형용사), they have very, very different meanings. Here are some easy tips to figure out which one you should use based on the situation.

Let’s begin with fun. Fun can be used as an adjective or as a noun, and it means;
“when you enjoy yourself and have a good time”.
Example: Playing baseball is FUN because you enjoy yourself and have a good time.

Now, let’s look at funny. Funny is an adjective that means;
“a situation, person or thing that makes you laugh”.
Example: A joke is FUNNY because it makes you laugh.

QUIZ:
TEST YOURSELF: FUN OR FUNNY?
1. Going to a party with friends is …
2. A comedy movie is …
3. When your friend tells you a joke, it is…
4. If your teacher has marker on his/her face, it is…
5. Celebrating your birthday with friends is …

END THOUGHT:
Here’s a simple trick to remember the difference; Funny = it makes you laugh; jokes, comedy movies, comedians (gagmen), etc…
Fun = when you enjoy yourself and have a good time; playing games, going out, etc…

QUIZ ANSWERS:
