Kyungil University (KIU) president, 정현태, has conferred an honorary scholarship certificate and awarded a small gift to sophomore student, Jin-a Kang. Ms. Kang, a sports major at KIU, decided to give up her merit scholarship, totaling two million won, for other classmates who are in need of financial support.

In honor of Ms. Kang’s selflessness, KIU has introduced ‘The Honorary Scholarship Program’, which awards an honorary scholarship certificate marked as ‘0’ won, to students who defer his/her scholarship to other students. Ms. Kang is the first KIU honorary scholarship recipient.

She said, “I already received the merit scholarship in the first semester, so I said that if I receive the scholarship again, I would like to defer it to another student. Fortunately, I earned it again and my parents and I decided to share this luck. I hope this bursary will provide financial aid to my classmates who are the most in need”.

She also said that she will work at the Pyeong-Chang Winter Olympics as a sports-diplomat and a member of the Korean Olympic Committee.

Additionally, an official from the Division of Scholarship & Welfare stated, “We keep track of students’ benefits through the division so that students may pursue their academic goals, regardless of their financial situation. The Honorary Scholarships Program will not only can make the campus a warmer environment, but will also help the students who are the most in need”.
