Special lecture Plan

Members: Doug, Adam A, Matt
Date: September 26th
Topic: Softball

Lesson Plan:

Indoor auditorium: Doug will present a video and basic powerpoint slideshow explaining the rules of softball gameplay. This will require the projector screen with a computer the same as used during our last session.

Outdoor @ soccer field: Split the group into pairs. Matt will explain the basic concept of using the glove to catch the ball. Isolate the difference between catching above shoulder height and below shoulder height. At the same time run through the basics of throwing. Have the pairs stand 5 metres apart and practice catching above shoulder height. One partner will have the glove while the partner will throw to them. After catching the partner rolls the ball back and repeat. Once confidence is gained increase the distance to 10 metres. Switch the glove to the other member and return to 5 metres and repeat.

Adam will then explain a couple of the main differences between softball and baseball along with a few similarities. This will include base running and a reminder of Doug’s rules video.

The group will then be split into even teams using a captain and player-by-player draft. Have the two teams enjoy a three-inning game of softball. This should allow each person a chance to bat and hopefully run the bases!

Goal: To have students discover a fun and easy sport that they all can enjoy.

Student number restriction: Ideally 20, but if there is greater interest this can be expanded to 30.

Location: Auditorium and soccer field.

Equipment: 20 gloves, 2/3 bats, 4 bases, 10 balls. All equipment can be provided by lecture team.
