Introduction: Government ministers and medical experts are unanimous in their opinion that taking exercise regularly has health benefits for everybody, regardless of age, sex, race or social background. This is the one of the main reasons why physical Education (PE) is a compulsory subject in the National Curriculums in The United States and Canada for all schools from elementary through year 11.

Health Benefits From Regular Exercise:

  1. - Physical well-being: improved performance by all systems of the body
  2. - Body Weight: in combination with a balance diet, will maintain a proper body weight and prevent
      obesity
  3. - Longevity: can contribute to a longer life
  4. - Stress Reduction: exercise releases endorphins or 'feel good' chemicals into the body. Exercise can
also ease feelings of anger, aggression and frustration.
  5. - Reduced Risk of Illness: the fitter and more active you are, the less likely you are to pick up
       illnesses.

The Four Health Related Components of Fitness:

  1. - Strength
  2. - Flexibility
  3. - Cardiovascular Endurance
  4. - Muscular Endurance

The Effects of a Lack of Exercise on the Body:

  1. - Increased body weight
  2. - Deterioration in all medical areas. Ex. Heart rate and blood pressure.
  3. - Loss of body tension and muscle atrophy
  4. - Reduced ability to perform physical tasks efficiently. Ex. climbing stairs, hiking, carrying shopping bags
       or gardening.

So, why should we exercise?

  1. - To maintain good health
  2. - To enjoy as part of a healty lifestyle
  3. - To enjoy as part of your social life.
  4. - To improve existing health.
  5. - To improve your fitness so that you can carry out physical tasks efficiently.
