Two KIU undergraduate students made headlines after formally registering a software copyright to the Korean Copyright Board with the contents they have learned during the last semester.

Lee, Kwon-Ho, Professor of Geo-Informatics Engineering of KIU, set the goal early in the fall semester while he was teaching classes related to computer programming to register copyright formally with the software that can be used practically with applying the knowledge they learn during the semester.

At the end of the semester, students submitted their results which applied their ideas and two results among those were registered formally to the Korean Copyright Board last month. Kim, Ji-Hyung and Yang, Jae-Kwon (Juniors) from the school of Geo-Informatics Engineering were recognized with the copyright of ‘RGB_Extractor’ and ‘GBAMaker’.

‘RGB_Extractor’ is a program that displays calculating the location of the Sun and color digital number in real time so it can be used to catch the latitude while a ship is sailing with playing video as well as saving RGB value and solar altitude angle.

Using NASA’s data of world fore area, ‘GBAMaker’ is the program that visualizes each country’s fire extent and has a good readability using animation technique. Once inputting 137 countries’ fire data, the route and all data of the route are inputted automatically so it is possible to check the calculation of fire extent and the change of the location.

Kim and Yang said, “It was pretty interesting to code the program directly with what we’ve learned and our creativity involved and the process to check the results.” And “We are very proud of registering the copyright with our software and now we have a desire to develop these further.”

Professor, Lee, Kwon-Ho said, “It represents a lot that our students made programs and developed those and finally registered the copyright even though those programs were not perfect.” “I expect that our students will make remarkable software in the field of weather, environment, disaster, and exploration.”
