KIU embarked on a “Food Trucks On Campus” program for the first time in Gyeongbuk province and had a free food tasting on campus on the 24th of February.

The project, Food Trucks On Campus, is a type of business that provides food  services from a truck on campus as a part of a regulatory reform from the government due to a revision in the law last July.

Last November, three universities; Kyungil University, Daegu Hanny University, and Gumi Universtiy, teamed up with POSCO and the Korean Food Industry Association and concluded an agreement under the supervision of Kungsang Province. The food trucks have been ready for their businesses on campus since March.

A Food truck is a remodeled truck in which merchants can cook snacks and sell them. It is already a very popular business item in many advanced countries like the US. Before the regulatory reform, there were only 28 food trucks officially licensed and operating throughout the country, including two trucks in Gumi and Sangjuthem parks in Gyeongbuk province.

Kim Yeong Bin, a 3rd year business major, is preparing a new brand called “Dahliatto”. It is a compound of the national flower “Dahlia” and the local food “burrito” from Mexico. He also held a free food tasting on campus that day. He said, “Since I made my brand to promote the chard of the food trucks in public, I’d like to play a role as an honorary ambassador for youth startups rather than make profits.”

Chung Hyun Tae, President of KIU, said "This Food Trucks On Campus project could happen thanks to many organizations. For example, Kungsang Province provided administrative support and POSCO donated trucks. Participating universities and the Korean Food Industry Association each offered the expense of remodeling the trucks and consulting. We are looking forward to creating various job openings through this project."

All Food Trucks On Campus are supposed to have an opening ceremony together at the beginning of March and officially start their businesses.
