The ‘Gatekeeper’ club in the nursing department (under advisor: You So-yeon) held a ‘seeing, hearing, and speaking’ education model, which is the Korean standard for suicide prevention training. It was carried out by the Korean Suicide Prevention Center and the Kyungsan Mental Health Center and managed by the Ministry of Health and Welfare, at the seminar room in building 8 on April 8th.

The ‘seeing, hearing, and speaking’ education model is the Korean standard for suicide prevention training. It aims to detect the risks of committing suicide early and to carry out activities for suicide prevention by having continuous interest in those who are at risk of suicide and provide them with appropriate professional service.

17 freshmen and sophomore students who completed the training course that day were newly appointed ‘Gatekeepers’, and they are expected to play a significant role in reducing the suicide rate in the community which KIU belongs to, and in Korea as a whole.

The ‘Gatekeeper’ club in the nursing department has performed a role as an illustrious Gatekeeper to protect precious lives, to construct and promote culture of life, and to extend the scope of activity by the public health center in Kyungsan since it was appointed as Gatekeeper by Kyungsan in September, 2013. This year, it offers and extends direct service by adding areas for visit and with the start of the campus campaign in May, it leads to spread the culture for respecting life for residents in Kyungsan as well as for KIU students.
