While undertaking practical training, two Kyungil University students saved the life of an emergency patient, thereby being awarded a certificate of “Heart Saver”.

During their curricular practical training last January, Ms. Lee, Yeon-Ji(23 years of age) and Mr. Lee, Hyeong-Woo(25 years of age), both of whom are seniors in the Department of Emergency Medical Technology, were called to the scene with emergency medical technicians. They then performed fast and timely CPR(cardiopulmonary resuscitation) on a cardiovascular disease patient who collapsed due to a sudden cardiac arrest.

The local fire department headquarters conducts strict screening and only selects emergency medical dispatchers and local citizens who resuscitate patients with cardiac arrest as “Heart Savers”. Through such screening, Ms. Lee, Yeon-Ji and Mr. Lee, Hyeong-Woo, came to receive a certificate from Mr. Lee, Hwang-Jin, head of the Daegu Western Metropolitan Fire Department on September 5th(Monday).

“I felt as if I were walking on thin ice because it was quite an urgent situation”, said Ms. Lee, Yeon-Ji. She also added that she felt pride in  pursuing her career as an emergency medical technician, thanks to the valuable experience of helping paramedics to save a life.

Being present at the awards ceremony, Mr. Kim, Yeong-Hwa, a professor in the Department of Emergency Medical Technology, said “I am proud of them all the more because not all student trainees can be certified as “Heart Savers”. He continued to say, “I will make an effort to teach students so that they may grow into elites fit to perform their own responsibilities on the scene as fire officers, just as the graduates used to do.”
