Having safety training on ordinary days,
but leading relief efforts in the event of a disaster

Due to the damages caused by the earthquakes in Gyeong-ju and the recent typhoons, concerns about large disasters, such as fires in high-rise buildings, have risen, and the importance of educating in how to prepare for disasters has been emphasized.

Particularly with the dormitories at KIU, where many students are clustered, could likely be vulnerable when disasters, such as in the event of a fire or an earthquake.

When considereing the large disasters that recently took place, Kyungil University (President Hyun Tae Chung) has been preparing for disasters by reinforcing safety training. Particularly, those living in the dormitories have had an evacuation drill and are going to organize and operate the ‘Student Self-Relief Team,’ in order to help each other and deal with disasters on their own.

The Student Self-Relief Team consists of students from the Departments of: Fire Safety, Nursing, Emergency Medical Technology, and Police Science, . asthese departments are interconnected for dealing with disasters. The students are assigned to four dormitories and share with other students their major-related knowledge about disasters on ordinary days. In the event of a disaster, they lead students and help saving others.

To assist the Student Self-Relief Team, other students have been divided into three teams and undertook their duties: the Reaction Team asks for external help and contacts the internal relief team; the Mobile Team secures an emergency exit route and maintains order; the Evacuation Team gives first aid to the injured and takes them to the hospital.

Jae-su Kim, the director of KIU dormitories, said, “Although we have staff members around 24 hours a day, we can’t save many students in the event of a large disaster. We’re planning to support and actively foster the Student Self-Relief Team by giving its members extra points when selecting students for dormitory admission.”
