The awards ceremony for the ‘2016 KIU idea contest’ was held on Wednesday, November 3rd in building 12,  room 201 in order to excavate and bring about the commercialization of students’ fresh ideas through systematic support as well as to promote campus start-ups’ vitalization.

At this contest, which was held by a KIU idea factory project team, a total 77 students from 15 departments participated in three sectors divided by: free, designated, and company designated contest. Students showed fresh and a variety of ideas. 10 teams attended free contests, 2 teams participated in designated contests, and the 2 teams competed in company designated contests were awarded respectively.

In the free contest sector, the grand prize was awarded to Lee Ji-min, from the design department, who invented a ‘Tooth glass with the practical function in the front and the rear’. Hwang Ji-sun, from the renewable energy department, won a gold prize with a ‘Door safety timer’. In addition, Hong Dong-hyun, from the department of psychological treatment, got a silver prize with ‘ A necklace for preventing pets’ barking using the vibration and reaction against it’. Two Bronze prizes were awarded to Ahn Seon-hong, from the department of nursing science who invented ‘Dip Night’, and Lee Hong-cheol, from the design department, who invented ‘A collar set up’ respectively.

In addition, in the designated contest sector, a ‘KIU Music App’ was produced by Park Jong-man with two colleagues from the design department and ‘Alarming gloves for the blind’ by Lee Jun-hyung with six colleagues from the department of computer science, were selected as ‘Good ideas’. In the company designated contest sector, ‘Traditional Lighting’ by Kim Min-ju, from the design department was selected for the first prize. Furthermore, Yoo Hye-sun, from  the school of photography & motion picture, who invented ‘The moving table for the single’, got a second prize.

Award winners in this contest received additional prizes such as a notebook computer, an I-pad, headphones as well as certificates of awards. In addition, award winners in the company designated contest sector received scholarships donated by companies, one million won and five hundred thousand won respectively.

The KIU idea factory project team has provided opportunities such as product commercialization and design registration for contest winners through idea contests which invite students’ fresh ideas. Furthermore, through a variety of programmes such as workshops, special lectures on start-up businesses, exhibitions, the KIU idea factory project team has made a lot of efforts so that students’ ideas can be lead to commercialization such as students’ start-ups becoming a reality.
