Even though it is just one among many universities in Daegu and Gyeongbuk province, KIU is the first university to adopt the ‘smart attendance system’ in all classes for the first time this semester. The ‘smart attendance system’ applies Bluetooth technology and allows for professors to check attendance automatically using a smart phone application in classes. This state of the art technology makes it possible to confirm attendance within only 30 seconds and it also helps professors save time for classes by not spending time for calling all the students’ names. All phones can be used in this system, including feature phones. Professors and students can exchange messages through this system. For example, professors can send pop quizzes to make sure whether students understand the contents of the class or not. Plus, if the classroom is changed, professors can send notice as well. Lee Kyung Eun ( junior, Design major) said “ After using the smart attendance system, I am satisfied that we can start the class fast and there is no attendance substitute”. Last year, KIU started a test operation only in elective courses and on March 6th, the ‘smart attendance system’ was introduced for all professors and fully operational in the university. Ah Sueng Sub(the dean of academic affairs) said that “With the smart attendance system, professors are able to not only check attendance in their smart phone display, but also to find those who are frequently absent and guide them. KIU will keep trying to build smart educational environment for all students.” |
