Running a Food Truck on Campus comes with Dreams: Building up work experience while running the food truck and developing corn dog recipes
A first-of-its-kind food truck in Gyeongbuk province comes with dreams of starting a business.
Three students, Lee Taekgon, Yu Jimin, and Hwang Haeji, all from the department of beauty, are running the food truck, “Dahlitto” on campus while in college. They run the food truck in designated places such as: the student union, dormitory, and the general education building, while balancing their work and school schedules.
The school campus turns into a field of learning as well as providing them with a path to pursue their dreams. The students move the food truck around the campus according to the changes in population and always keep the menu creative.
They now offer a new menu, consisting of a corn dog, following last year’s Mexican food,. They chose the menu because it is easy to make and easy to eat. They take into consideration the size and packaging of corn dogs to help people consume them easier.
Corn dogs attract a lot of students with their low price: a classic corn dog costs 1,500 won and cheese-stuffed corn dog, 2000 won. A portion of the profits from the food truck is donated to the school every month.
The representative, Lee Taekgon, said that running a food truck would give him great opportunities to gain real life experience and confidence in his future ventures. He also said that he learned to embrace and get a feel for service, food safety and sanitation from the experience and they would become the top priorities in his life .
The food truck, Dahlitto, has been operating since 2016 in which Kyungil University was in partnership with POSCO and the Korean Food Industry Association. Applicants for the food truck business are required to submit an application form to the office of student affairs. The application form should include the following things: reasons for applying for the job, management plan, profits plan, and the effectiveness of expectation. One team is selected based on the creativity of menus, the feasibility of the business and so on. This year, students from the department of beauty were chosen to run the food truck.
