KIU students participated in the Idea Factory Product Exhibition.
“We want to become the second Steve Jobs, dreaming of merging IT and design.”

The brilliant ideas and products of college students who have tried to turn their imagination into reality have gathered in one place.

Students of Kyungil University's Idea Factory Project participated in the 'Startup 4.0 / 2017 Idea Factory Product Exhibition' organized by the Daejeon KAIST Business Center on Tuesday, the 25th. Students exhibited 5 pieces of their own products and 3 products made with KAIST and Dankook University. As expected, their products were well received.

At the exhibition, there were 30 products from 6 different universities participating in the Idea Factory Project, including: Kyungil University, KAIST, Kyungnam University, Dankook University, Chonnam University, and Korea Maritime University.

Particularly, it was the 'electric nest' of Kim Young-min (a 4th year student from the department of design) of Kyungil University that attracted the most attention. A bluetooth speaker and smart phone wireless charger were embedded in the tree which is natural material, and it is evaluated as an emotional product. The nest, which is the mother of life, was the motif. During the evaluation process, it was noted that the product contains both the artistry and the functionality by symbolizing the life that is raised there, lighting the light, and expressing the charging of the smartphone metaphorically.

‘Eye vision’, a product for young and infant eyesight protection made by three university students, including Kyungil University, KAIST and Dankook University, also attracted attention. It uses raspberry pie cam to recognize the face of infants and young children, and has the ability to block TV images or switch to vision-protected images when entering the recommended viewing distance. The results of interviews by housewives revealed that more than 70% of potential consumers were willing to buy this product.

Kang Hyung-koo, the head of the foundation support team at Kyungil University, said, "The collaboration system that commercializes ideas and the in-school infrastructure that can produce prototypes at any time are well established. We will continue to actively support students' ideas to lead to prototypes and to achieve more outstanding results“. Actually, Kyungil University has a variety of infrastructure, such as: 3D printers, CNC milling, laser markers in the space of creation in the school such as Eye Maker, and the Idea Factory and it supports students' prototype creation.

The idea factory business is a system to support the production of prototypes so that fresh and novel ideas of college students lead to start-ups. Starting with KAIST in 2014, it is currently operated by 10 universities, including Kyungil University. Since the launch of the Idea Factory Project in Kyungil University in July 2015, it has helped to find out ideas and technology commercialization in the university, such as finding 126 student ideas, producing 18 prototypes, connecting 21 jobs for participating students, and 6 patent applications.
