Architect Kim Jung-hwan from the Architecture Department Wins Grand Prize at the Gyeongbuk Architecture Grand Prix

Over 50 students from the Kyungil University (KIU) Architecture Department were awarded for excellence at the Gyeongbuk Architecture Grand Prix. Senior student and KIU president, Chung Hyun-tae, was awarded the Gyeongsangbuk-do Grand Prize at the exhibition.

The title of Chung’s work was Archigram's Fun Palace 2.0, and the theme was the renovation of Gyeongsan’s waste furniture factory using mobile architecture. This work consisted of an experimental space where a user would be able to discover the function of the building, and also be able to utilize it freely. Archigram was a young architect group in the 1960’s. Mr. Kim tried to show the reality of 2018 by reflecting on Archigram’s previous work.

On Novemeber 1, 2018, Kim Jung-hwan was awarded a certificate, and a prize of 6 million won, from the governor of Gyeongsangbuk-do at the awards ceremony held at KCCE Gimcheon Headquarters. "I appreciate Professor Jung Young-cheol and Kim Byung-joo for their advice and guidance," said Mr. Kim. "I will be an architect who continues developing and trying to be better.”

In addition to the grand prize, more than 30 students won the Excellence Prize, including senior, Yoon Sang-young; eight more students received prizes for special works, and 10 others had entries as well. Moreover, the students at KIU won 15 prizes at the Daegu Architecture Competition on October 28.

Kim Byeong-joo, head of the architectural department, said, "The full support of the University and the enthusiastic guidance of the professors were a huge help with these achievements. The competition gives students motivation. It will be a great help for us to become a prominent architecture department that represents the region."
