Kyungil University (President Chung Hyun-tae) is the first Korean university to obtain a temporary license for self-driving cars using small buses from the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport. Several universities have acquired the license for self-driving cars, but Kyungil University is the first university in Korea for a bus.

The licensed vehicle is a 15-seat Daewoo Xylbus' Lesta vehicle, and Kyungil University's Institute of Self-driving Vehicle Convergence Technology is working on last-minute development to operate it as a self-driving shuttle bus for students to commute.

Kyungil University plans to upgrade its shuttle bus self-driving technology by the end of this year, complete the test on the university campus and the entrance to Hayang-eup with actual students on board, and officially operate it as a shuttle bus for students in the first half of next year.

In a test to acquire a temporary license, the bus of Kyungil University's Institute of Self-driving Vehicle Convergence Technology passed a total of 23 test items, including high speed and cruising, lane change, follow-up of front vehicles, signal and pedestrian response, and precision guidance, and was given a pass notification and license as of June 19.

"Autonomous driving technology is an area where high-tech technologies such as artificial intelligence, 5G, sensors, and high-performance cameras are harmonized to the extent that they are symphonies of the Fourth Industrial Revolution," said Yoo Byung-yong, head of the Institute of Convergence Technology (Director of Autonomous Driving Mobility). "With the acquisition of the shuttle bus, Kyungil University will be able to add great strength to the vision of Daegu, the leading city of future cars.“

President Chung Hyun-tae said, "As a result of steadily investing in fields related to the Fourth Industrial Revolution, including autonomous driving technology, and focusing on research and development, we are the first Korean university to acquire a temporary license for autonomous driving using bus roll," adding, "We will continue to actively support Kyungil University to become a mecca for autonomous driving technology in Korea."
