At "2020 Autonomous Driving Contest for University Students" held in Suseong Alpha City on October 31, ‘Kiumcar’ of Kyungil University (President Chung Hyun-tae), in their first competition, received the highest score among universities participating in Daegu and North Gyeongsang Province and ranked sixth in the overall ranking.

The Autonomous Driving Contest for University Students was hosted by the Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy and sponsored by Daegu City. This year, 15 teams from 14 universities from all over the country competed with each other for self-driving technologies and skills. KIU received a total score of 5,468 points, ranking sixth overall. And this is the highest among universities in Daegu and North Gyeongsang Province.

This contest was conducted in the way of evaluating the process of starting simultaneously from a designated position for teams on Suseong Alpha City road, picking up passengers on the way, and unloading passengers at the fixed destination. Points shall be awarded to the teams that comply with traffic laws and perform their duties accurately, and points shall be deducted if they violate traffic laws or deviate from a designated location.

Park Kyung-wook (2nd year of graduate school mechatronics engineering), the head of ‘Kiumcar’, said, "Unfortunately, we failed to win a prize because we couldn't keep the overall score until the end of the contest, but we’re satisfied that we competed proudly with universities famous for self-driving."

Yoo Byung-yong (Dean of Autonomous Driving Mobility), academic adviser, said “This was our first competition, so we thought we were relatively inferior in experience, but we overcame this and got a good result.” And added “It is expected to produce better results next year due to the high level of support at the university level and the high degree of technology completion.

President Chung Hyun-tae praised students for their hard work and delivered a special scholarship in the president's office on Monday, November 2nd. "As autonomous driving technology is a high-tech field that combines core technologies of the fourth industrial revolution, the speed and performance of technology development will contribute to the development of universities and industries," President Chung stressed.

Meanwhile, the rankings of the universities that participated in this contest are as follows. There are 14 universities, including Chungbuk National University, Kookmin University, Inha University, Soongsil University, Chosun University, Kyungil University, Keimyung University, KAIST, Pohang University of Science and Technology, Kyungpook National University, Hongik University, Sungkyunkwan University, and Korea Transportation University.
