Students of the department of Architecture at Kyungil University (President Hyun-Tae Jeong) respectively won the Grand Prize, the First Prize, and the Excellence Award at the 40th Daegu International Architecture Fair. In addition, 16 people won prizes.
The Daegu International Architecture Fair is a competition organized by Korea Institute of Architects and Daegu-Gyeongbuk Architects Association. It is a Korea's best architecture competition for its 40th year this year. The awards ceremony was held at the Daegu Exhibition and Convention Center (EXCO) at 6 pm on the 12th.
This year's competition theme was 'Architecture of Healing'. Da-Hyun Koo (advisers: Young-cheol Jeong and Byeong-ju Kim), a senior in the architecture department at Kyungil University, requested 'Green Village'. It combined a collective housing format that uses urban agriculture as a medium and the importance of outdoor activities to heal and regenerate in a time when indoor activities are difficult due to the recent Corona 19. She won the Grand Prize (Daegu Mayor's Prize) and 8 million won in prize money.
Da-Hyun Koo said, “I am honored to be awarded the Grand Prize at the Daegu International Architecture Fair, which boasts of honor and tradition, and I am grateful to my advisor”. She added, “Even after graduation, I will continue my activities as an architect that raises the honor of the Department of Architecture at Kyungil University”.
Seo-Young Kim, a senior in the Architecture department received the top prize. She proposed a method of creating a residential environment that can accommodate the untouched society's rest spaces and convenience facilities in the concept of a community of common residential environments that have been transformed by Corona 19. Seong Myung-Ki, a senior majoring in Architecture, won the Excellence Prize. He submitted a plan for an apartment complex for elderly single-person households through the title of “Begin Again”.
In addition to these winners, 16 students majoring in Architecture at Kyungil University were also listed on the nomination list, and the Daegu International Architecture Fair was “swept away” from the Grand Prize to the winning.
Professor Jeong Young-cheol and Kim Byeong-joo of the Department of Architecture at Kyungil University, who guided the students, said, “Our students accurately recognized the situation in which the paradigm of architecture is changing due to Corona 19 and made architectural proposals for solving urban problems and overcoming the coronavirus. It must have been the driving force behind winning a prize”.
Architecture department of Kyungil University was opened in 1963 with the establishment of the university, and this year marks its 57th year. Recently, it completed the due diligence on the certification of architecture education from the Korea Architectural Accrediting Board (KAAB). |
