- The Departments of Social Welfare and Emergency Medical Technology in Kyungil University Conducted a Workshop with Social Workers, Bringing about Much Interest in Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation Education of Social Workers Caring for Single Seniors

College classes have changed by going field-centered and are going hand in hand with local organizations, bringing a big help to local communities.

The Departments of Social Welfare and Emergency Medical Technology in Kyungil University announced that they have conducted a 2017 workshop for single seniors making friends for two days since the 14th of October. The workshop, in which about 40 social workers from 20 organizations in the areas of Yeongnam and Jaeju participated, provided detailed programs being supported by the Beom-Mull Senior Welfare Center (Superintendent, Tae Yang Woo) and supported by the Social Economy Center.

The Capstone design practice team ‘Beyond the EMT( advisor, Young Wha Kim)’ from the Department of Emergency Medical Technology in Kyungil University transferred their classrooms to the Social Economy Center and educated social workers about cardiopulmonary resuscitation, resulting in a great interest in it. Students in the department educated social workers chiefly by caring for single seniors and demonstrating how to use automated external defibrillator and how to practice cardiopulmonary resuscitation via a situation drama.

A head of the team, senior Yong Woo Syon, said that he was proud of helping communities by means of his expertise and skills he learned at school. Moreover, he expressed that he would try to implement some of his ideas from the capstone design class and innovator TOBE project into the community.

Professor, Tae Young Um who designed this workshop addressed that there has been a decrease in single seniors’ dying of solitude and committing suicide and that this workshop was a collaboration of university, local communities, and welfare centers, and is so very meaningful.

On the other hand, Kyungil University is the first university in Korea to be opening capstone design classes throughout a variety of its departments. In addition, its LINC+ project team is contributing to community innovation through the project of TOBE Innovator which organized teams out of about 600 undergraduates depending on their majors.
