Kim Jin-Ho, who is a senior and majoring in fashion design in Kyungil University, received an award at the DALIAN CUP International Youth Design Contest (henceforth, DALIAN CUP).

The DALIAN CUP is an international fashion design contest in which the Dalian city government has hosted for 25 years. They provide participants with air fare and lodging expenses, and give prize money and supplementary prizes. In the final round, there was competition among 30 fashion designers and college students worldwide who were selected from such countries as China, Japan, and the United Kingdom through three sets of screenings. Jin-Ho Kim, who was awarded in this final round, was given one million won and received thet privilege of a booth lease for the international fashion textual goods fair to be opened next year and also prioritized in the DALIAN Fashion Week presentation.

The topic of this contest was ‘Embrace’ and Jin-Ho Kim made a costume that expressed the cardiac rate under the title ‘Embrace of the Beginning of the World.’ His clothes are characterized by ‘comfort’ and ‘practicality’, in which polyester, cotton, and nylon synthetic fiber were used, and they were black in color to highlight chicness, creating simple and practical costumes. Kim lost his nerve to see other participants’ fabulous goods, but good comments like ‘it’s different from others’ had given him confidence and it went so smoothly in the fashion show and in one to one reviews.

Not only did committee members compliment the practicality of his goods, but models who wore his clothes themselves at the fashion show wanted to buy them. One day he had to look for clothes because one model didn’t take them off. In the end, he gave her one of his works when he returned to Korea, and this is an episode that he told us about.

Kim chose his major depending on his acquaintances’ advice, but he does not regret it. Rather, he participated in several contests, received awards, and so could easily decide this as a career after graduation since his major fits his interests. The fact that he has good hand skills so can make a lot of works led him to experience through contests as many as he could. He was given the ‘Brand Award’ at the fashion design contest in the area of Daegu and Kyungbuk last July. He has a goal of taking a job at clothes venture business after graduation, and thus has been studying English and getting a certificate from the design program.

Kim Jin-Ho said that “this experience of the DALIAN CUP made me motivated in itself, and so I’m happy to get awarded in the competition with international designers. Moreover, I am so proud of myself as I was preparing for the contest in the middle of busy school life for two months.”

Professor, Ju-Young Lee from the Department of Fashion Design of Kyungil University revealed that “All the professors in the department are doing their best to let their students experience a variety of situations and develop themselves. I will try to give more opportunities to them in the future as well.”
