Kyungil University (President Hyun-Tae Chung) announced that they opened a ‘Fire Extinguishing Agent’ course on September 16th in K-MOOC, a Korean version of free online college courses.

The ‘Fire Extinguishing Agent’ course is taught by Myung-Chul Kim, a professor from the Department of Fire Safety at KIU. Among more than 1,000 fire-related courses nationwide, Kim's course is the only one opened in K-MOOC. The course provides extensive knowledge and information with 65 video classes for 15 weeks. In the future, it is expected that people who work for fire safety, for example, those in the Fire Facility Association or Fire Safety Association, will increase their demand for related courses.

The course introduces knowledge about fire safety which is unfamiliar to the public, but can be used in their everyday life. Particularly, it aims to offer advanced knowledge to fire safety majors and workers.

This course helps college students majoring in Fire Safety to learn basic knowledge about chemistry, understand fire extinguishing agents, and study its types and characteristics. The course also helps workers in the fire service to obtain certificates like Fire Protection Engineer.

Professor Kim classifies fire extinguishing agents and introduces each of their characteristics and operating regulations in the course. The contents of the course include conditions and classification of substances, combustion and extinguishment, water-based fire extinguishing agents, gas-based fire extinguishing agents, dry powder extinguishing agents, extinguishers and automatic fire extinguishing equipment, and so on.

The course started on September 16th and will end on January 28th next year. If the student’s final grade is over 60, he or she can obtain a certificate of completion. Anyone who registers for the course on the K-MOOC website(www.kmooc.kr) by December 31st can take the course.
