- More Attention Being Given to Kyungil University’s 'Creativity& Fusion KIUM Fair 2017'

Kyungil University (President Chung Hyun-Tae) is conducting capstone design courses for ideas development and creative product development in all schools and departments. In order to share and disseminate the results of the creative and fusion activities, the 2017 KIUM Fair was held in various places on campus including the Kyungil University Library on December 7th (Thursday). Particularly, this event stood out as being the promotion of creativity and fusion in order to change and evolve in keeping with the fourth industrial revolution era.

The '2017 KIUM Fair’was sponsored by the Ministry of Education, the Korea Research Foundation, and Kyungbuk Provincial Government. It was also co-sponsored by the Kyungil University LINC+ Project Team, the Engineering Education Innovation Center, and the Startup Support Team. It has received fervent responses from the audience as they exhibited students’ capstone design works and they also conducted a competition, a job audition, and a job forum ‘golden bell’ quiz game. In addition, it attracted more than 500 students by organizing various events such as employment consultation, 3D printer experience, free photography, food trucks, and the KIUM market (selling students’ DIY products).

Capstone Design is a comprehensive design program that allows engineering students to design and build their works in order to develop the ability to solve problems that may be encountered in the industrial field. However, Kyungil University is expanding the program to the departments of humanities and arts and physical education to provide opportunities for non-engineering students to design their works. In particular, inter-disciplinary fusion has produced remarkable achievements. The synergy effect was significant when they introduced the capstone design course intended exclusively for the engineering departments to the non-engineering departments.

In fact, this year's 'Creativity & Fusion KIUM Fair 2017' showcased excellent design works not only of engineering departments, but also of non-engineering departments such as literature information, nursing, psychotherapy, social welfare, and design. Among them are ‘Development of a mentoring program for children of crime victims’ by the department of psychotherapy; ‘Design of a cultural, educational, commercial and medical complex and welfare facilities for single mothers’ by the school of design; ‘Publication of guidebooks on Korean culture and etiquette for foreigners’ by the school of global commerce, and so on.

At this event, the technical skills of the engineering department were definitely notable. The non-contact type eddy current brake for bicycle' products of the startup circle RLC, which recently won the grand prize at the 6th G-Star University Entrepreneur Competition, attracted the audience’s attention. The students of the department of disaster prevention, cyber security, and robotic engineering, who won the awards at the ‘Creative General Design Competition, also put their design works on display. Their idea, which utilized their specialty knowledge and skills, included 'locks for passenger helmets that are automatically released in case of fire', 'earthquake detection doors', 'leaked photos and confidential document security solution system', 'basketball pitching machine equipped with camera sensors', and so forth.

Mr. Kim Hyun-Woo, director of the LINC+ project team at Kyungil University, said, "Through this 'Creativity and Fusion KIUM Fair', we have prepared an environment to prepare for and lead the 'Fourth Industrial Revolution' which is the next generation’s industrial revolution fully realized by creativity and fusion.” He also said, “We will continue to lead the Fourth Industrial Revolution by actively promoting fusion education between students’ creative thoughts and academic studies."
