- 17 students’ works were selected for the exhibition, including the excellence award and special selection award

17 students of architectural engineering at Kyungil university(President Chung Hyun-Tae) swept the awards including the excellence award, special selection award at ‘The 37th Exhibition of Daegu Architecture’ held by the Daegu-Gyeongbuk Institute of Architects and demonstrated their abilities. After the ‘National Exhibition of Korean Architecture’, the Exhibition of Daegu Architecture is the second oldest contest exhibit in Korea.

Lee Hong-Hwan(a senior student) won an excellence award through three public judging processes, Lee Young-Mok(a senior student) won a special selection award, and 15 students’ works were selected for the exhibition, so a total of 17 students of architectural engineering of Kyungil University were honored with the awards.

Lee Hong-Hwan received the excellence award for his work, ‘Justice and Placelessness’ on the subject of renovation of JungangSangga(a shopping center) and Mugunghwa Department Store. Lee HongHwan noticed that declining Mugunghwa Department Store was the place where older people gathered to recall their old memories, so he chose to renovate the place into the facilities where older people can call up last generation’s memories and enjoy their lives instead of tearing down the building and constructing a new building. He got a lot of attention by offering architectural solution plans concretely such as removing temporary structures and reorganizing the flow of human traffic.

Lee Young-Mok received the special selection award for his work, ‘Decoding City’ on the subject of renovation of a chemical plant located in Ansim Lotus Flower Garden. He planned to change the place into the workspace, the exhibition space, the selling and multi-purpose art space which artists can use freely while maintaining the frame of Ansim Lotus Flower Garden which has been abandoned for 8 years. By renovating the plant building that has been left off to meet the needs of today, the place seems to improve the landscape and atmosphere of the lotus garden.

The two students who won the excellence award and the special selection award are going to visit Naosima in Japan called Artistland in December to get an opportunity to see excellent architecture. Besides these two students, the works of 15 students were accepted for the exhibition, so the architectural engineering of KIU got the recognition for the ability of designing a sustainable city. Last summer vacation, the architectural engineering program of KIU achieved the results of 12 students, including a winner of a participation prize, being a finalist in the ‘Busan International Architecture Competition’ co-hosted by the Busan Institute of Architects and Busan City.

Professor Kim Byung-Ju, who supervised the participating students said “the architectural engineering of KIU produced good results steadily in the Exhibition of Daegu Architecture which is held every year including two excellence award winners last year and a excellence award winner and a special selection award winner this year.” and added “we will provide our students with the opportunities to verify their abilities and strengthen their competence through contest exhibits and competitions at home and abroad.”
