KIU overseas volunteer group did volunteer works such as education and labor service at Tipolo elementary school in Mandaue City, the Philippines, for two weeks starting January 1. Taking this opportunity, KIU signed an MOU with Madaue City to continue to do volunteer work continuously and systematically in Mandaue.
KIU students did a lot of education volunteer work for Tipolo elementary school students such as Taekwondo, balloon art, origami, cardiopulmonary resuscitation, how to brush one’s teeth, and also did some maintenance work on school buildings such as arranging construction materials and laying bricks.
Especially in this selection process for new volunteers, extra points were given to those who were able to communicate in English, do cardiopulmonary resuscitation(CPR), and play Taekwondo to raise the quality of volunteer work. The volunteers took some CPR practice models which are used in major subjects of the Department of Emergency Medical Technology, had the elementary school students of the Philippines experience the model firsthand, and this attracted their attention.
Kwon Junyoung(Department of Chemical Engineering) who participated in this volunteer work said “I was worried I wouldn’t adapt myself to new circumstances at first, but I could volunteer pleasantly because the elementary school students really listened to our instructions.” and added “We could finish this volunteer work well thanks to a concerted effort by all members of KIU overseas volunteer group.”
Meanwhile, this volunteer work was organized by Mandaue City, and KIU executed MOU with Mandaue City for the future systematic overseas volunteer work. It is expected that more diverse volunteer programs would be arranged in the future on the base of the business agreement.
