- Lee Yeonji and Seol Yoonji in the department of emergency medical technology, assigned to marine police and firefighter
- To become the best rescue agent to prevent another MV Sewol

Several female graduates from the Emergency Medical Technology Department at Kyungil University (President Chung Hyuntae) have become actively engaged as marine police officers and firefighters.

Lee Yeonji(25) passed the special recruitment examination of the maritime police after graduating in February, 2017. She is currently being trained at The Maritime Police Training Institute in Yeosu, Jeollanam-do.

The title of Mr. Kim‘s paper is 'Detection schemes of man-in-the-middle attacks on smart devices'. The main content of the thesis is that smart phones and notebooks are vulnerable to man-in-the-middle attacks, and security books are presented accordingly. In his research, he focused on smartphone security research by demonstrating that smartphones are not responding to hacking attacks experimentally and by implementing detection algorithms that can respond to such attacks.

Lee Yeonji was one of only three female candidates who passed the special recruitment process of the marine police nationwide in 2017. Commenting on her accomplishment she stated, “Since the marine police are in charge of three duties in the sea, military, police, and firefighting, the training takes nine months” and “I will be a full-time maritime police officer of the Republic of Korea when I am able to overcome the hard training and be placed in the field.”

Lee decided to become a marine police officer because she thought EMTs are greatly needed in this field. Due to the great distance from the field to the hospital, the role of EMTs are incredibly important to the maritime police. She was also attracted by the helicopter transport system. She said, “I am going to be a person who gives a helping hand to those who need it, so that there will never be another MV Sewol.”

Seol Yoonji(25), who graduated with Lee, also passed the firefighting officer examination after graduation. She now works at the West Fire Department in Daegu. She said, “I could not forget the role of an EMT who does their best to treat patients in the worst cases when I was practicing in a fire station” and “after seeing it, I thought that I could become such a good firefighting officer.”

The most memorable thing to Seol was when she met college juniors who practiced at her workplace. She said, “it was a new experience to see my juniors in an environment that is not a school.”

The students in the department of Emergency Medical Technology who took part in the practice walked to the ambulance with the EMTs to see and learn about what the EMTs were doing to treat the patient and to gain practical experience. “I want a job as a firefighting officer because it is a profession that requires a sense of duty and requires you to be a leader in everything in the field, from patient treatment to hospital transportation,” she said.

Both of the students said that what they learned during their time at Kyungil was helpful in practice. They expressed their gratitude to Professor Kim Younghwa of the department of Emergency Medical Technology and other professors. They said that during their school years, they learned some lessons such as First Aid, Traumatic Care, and Specialized Cardiac Resurfacing. They also got a sense of what working in the field was like from practicing wound dressing and splinting patients with severe trauma, ECG analysis for cerebrovascular patients, and stroke screening.

“We are proud of being the only department established in Yeongnam 4-year colleges whose students are mainly active in 119 emergency services, large emergency medical centers, and public officials,” said the head of the department of Emergency Medical Technology, Kim Younghwa.
