The Department of Architecture at Kyungil University (President Hyun Tae Chung) introduced “Smart Architectural Structure Design Technology” applying advanced digital convergence technology based on artificial intelligence (AI) into the architectural engineering major education program.
While the existing architectural design was done by structural analysis based on the theory and experience of an architectural engineer, education on technology that automatically finds the optimal design model desired by the client through automated architectural structure design combined with advanced computing technology is provided at the Major of Architectural Engineering at Kyungil University.
Professor Byung Kwan Oh, who was appointed to the Department of Architecture at Kyungil University this year, received a doctoral degree from the Department of Architectural Engineering at Yonsei University with a thesis presenting a method to evaluate building stability using smart architectural structure technologies such as artificial intelligence (AI) technology and advanced sensing technology. In addition, he published a number of research papers applying advanced artificial intelligence technologies such as deep learning in postdoctoral research courses conducted at Princeton University in the United States and at Yonsei University in Korea.
These artificial intelligence-based optimized architectural design technologies have been adopted by world-class SCIE(Science Citation Index Expanded) journals such as 『Energy and Buildings(Impact factor: 4.87)』 and 『Journal of Cleaner Production(Impact factor: 7.25)』 and have been recognized for excellence.
Professor Oh is providing a customized education on the technologies to students in the Kyungil University's KIU-L林(professor-student learning community) program and “Artificial Intelligence and Architectural Engineering Seminar” supported by the LinkPlus Project.
Won Joon Oh, a student at Kyungil University majoring in architectural engineering, who is participating in the KIU-L林 program, said, “Through the program, I came to understand the concept of green building design for economic construction and environmental load reduction as well as automated architectural structure design technology. I know how to apply and what to prepare for.”
Professor Byung Kwan Oh explained, "As advanced artificial intelligence introduces a smart architectural structure design program that provides optimal architectural structure design, it is possible to have innovative education that the satisfaction of the clients is increased and the mistakes in the construction process are taken away."
Professor Shin Jo Eom, head of the Department of Architecture at Kyungil University, said, “the major of architectural engineering, which received the best evaluation only 12 got from the industry perspective of the Korea Education Association in 2020, is spurring the cultivation of new smart talents who will be the first to understand and lead future construction technologies with future-oriented curriculum reorganization practical field trips.” He also emphasized, “In addition to the newly introduced smart architecture education program, we are developing new educational programs such as the lectures regarding AI-based building condition diagnosis technology, the understanding AI-based zero energy building, and so on, and it will be applied to practical education through the systematization of industry-academia cooperation-based curriculum.”
