A self-driving school bus developed by Kyungil University (President Chung Hyun-Tae) began operating on the actual road on the 29th (Monday). Kyungil University is the first university in the country to operate a school bus for transporting students as an autonomous vehicle.

Kyungil University, which obtained its first autonomous shuttle bus license from the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport last year, has been able to start operating after technical advancement, driving section map construction, safety education, and internal testing.

The technology applied to Kyungil University's self-driving shuttle bus is a 25-seater bus at the level of "Level 3," which is a conditional self-driving method that manually switches only when driver intervention is required, such as child protection areas or congestion sections.

Kyungil University's Self-Driving Vehicle Convergence Technology Research Institute and Professor's startup Autonomu have jointly completed the construction of all technologies and maps necessary for autonomous shuttle buses, and completed safety and technology completion checks through empirical driving.

Kyungil University students who want to use the autonomous shuttle bus will use it at the school bus platform on campus and designated platforms installed around Hayang Station, and personnel who have received training in autonomous driving technology will be in charge of safe driving on the bus.

Yoo Byung-Yong, head of Kyungil University's Institute of Autonomous Vehicle Convergence Technology, said, "The autonomous shuttle bus that starts operation is a collection of the technological achievements of the nation's top researchers.���

Kyungil University President Chung Hyun-Tae said, "Some autonomous vehicles drive on the road, but Kyungil University is the first in the country to attempt autonomous driving on a shuttle bus that transport students led by universities.". He also stressed, "it is meaningful in that universities lead the way in securing technology for future cars in Gyeongsan, a university city and specialized area for the auto parts industry."
