Kyungil University (President Hyun-Tae Jung) established the K-Culture Entertainment Faculty from the 2022 academic year. This department consists of the entertainment majors in broadcasting acting and K-pop, and the OTT (online video service), film and drama majors that train planners, directors, and writers.

Professor Lee Hak-jun, who worked as a reporter for the Chosun Ilbo and TV Chosun PD, joined the K-Culture Entertainment Faculty last year. Professor Lee received the Korea Journalist Award, Monaco Monte Carlo TV Festival Grand Prize, British World Broadcasting Federation Best Documentary Award, US Emmy Award for Documentary Award 3 times, Houston Film Festival Platinum Award for Broadcasting Category, Poland Cameraupscura Grand Prize, Singapore Asian TV Festival Documentary Grand Prize. In addition, he has had a splendid career, such as being invited to the competition section of the Amsterdam International Documentary Film Festival (IDFA) in the Netherlands, invited to the competition section for new directors at the Vancouver Film Festival in Canada, invited to the Lincoln Center Music Documentary Film Festival in the US, and selected by the Jeonju Cinema Project (JCP) at the Jeonju Film Festival.

In addition, after being appointed to Kyungil University, by utilizing the connections he had accumulated while as a PD at a broadcasting station, he contributed to the splendid composition of the faculty of the department. They are 'Avengers'-level faculty in the field of K-culture, including actor Cha In-pyo, actor Oh Ji-ho, singer Jo-han Kim, and composer Yong-jin Jang. Professor Cha In-pyo is a recognized Hallyu star. Since his debut, he has been working as a top actor, as well as a documentary director, novelist, and drama writer. Professor Oh Ji-ho, famous for being a handsome sculptor, has been in a relationship with Kyungil University since 2020, and is active in dramas and entertainment programs. Professor Johan Kim is famous as a vocal teacher for Girls' Generation and Super Junior, and is a top-notch singer and music producer in Korea with numerous hit songs. Professor Jang Yong-jin is not only known as the composer of the legendary idol band H.O.T, but also as a music director for several dramas and movies. Recently, he has been concentrating on creating a metaverse girl group.

Professor Hak-Jun Lee designed the curriculum of the Faculty of K-Culture Entertainment to be field-oriented, such as practical work and practice, to suit the characteristics of the department. All majors will receive intensive practical training for three years from their second year at the practice center located near Seoul. In addition, it is expected that it will be possible to obtain a double degree from a leading art college in the United States. The Kyungil University campus in Gyeongsan is also fully equipped with practical classrooms and practice rooms where students can unleash their talents, such as music, acting, and dance, to an infinite extent.

Professor Lee recently received an unexpected offer from the prestigious Stanford University in the United States. He was invited as a director for a project to produce an educational documentary shared by American universities. Professor Lee’s relationship with Stanford began in 2015 when he published the book ‘Crossing Heaven’s Border’ in English, which dealt with the human rights issue of North Korean defectors. Stanford recently started an innovative project to publish important research results in both a book and an online documentary, paying attention to students getting used to video rather than print.

The theme of the first project to be completed this summer is K-POP. Stanford decided to complete an educational online documentary along with a book and distribute it free of charge to American college students for use in their studies. If this experiment is successful, Stanford plans to expand this work. The work of compiling research results through online documentaries and books is expected to expand to major US universities.

The reason why Stanford invited Professor Hak-Jun Lee to work together on an important project is because of his work and research achievements. This is because Professor Lee not only released the documentary film ‘9 Muses of Star Empire’ about K-pop in 2012, but also published an English book titled ‘K-POP IDOLS’ in the United States in 2019. Professor Lee has assembled the best staff for online documentary production, and holds online meetings with Stanford every month. An interesting fact is that the common language of this project, which is a collaboration between Korea and the United States, is Korean, not English. It is thanks to the fact that the main staff of Stanford learned Korean with the recent Korean wave and used it freely.

Professor Lee said, “I feel the magnificence of K-culture and the meaning of globalization with my whole body. As a scholar, I will do my best to make a good work as I received an honorable offer.”
